Chicken Love

Nathan and I have been thinking about getting chickens in the spring. We are thinking 4 or 5. We have been doing a lot of research on the different breeds and which would be suitable for our location and family.

Those were some chicks we saw at the fair ... adorable aren't they? :)
Here is one of the many chickens that were there.

I really felt bad for these chickens ... sticky handed children grabbing through the bars ripping out feathers ... many had bald spots .  Perhaps they should have smaller bars or chicken wire so the small children can enjoy them with out hurting them ... I'm sure the little children don't realize what they are doing. I have had 3 children and I know how fast little fingers can be.

Here is one of the many roosters that were there.

Speaking of roosters ... we can't figure out if we should get one or not. Some suggest to do so while others suggest not.  So help me all you experienced chicken lovers ... what is your take on having a rooster to keep the chickens happy? Does it really make them happier? Does it affect their docility? Rooster yes? Rooster no? Let me know what you think.

Perhaps I should just stick with the roosters in the kitchen :)

  1. My friend just recently bought chickens and was told she needed a rooster too - so she got one...named him Ovid and they all live happily.

  2. We've done both and I find if you only have girls, there is a real pecking order established early on. If you live w/neighbors you might think twice about a rooster. They are noisy and get up EARLY every morning. We like having the rooster so I always like how the team runs better w/one. I have silkies up here at home and we keep layers down by the barn . We sell organic eggs at market.
